Kastania

Day 7
A local greets us in Kastania
It was like stepping back in time in Kastania. This place is part of the Mesa Mani Penisula. Tourism doesn't touch this part of Greece very often. I felt privledged to be there. We walked into this sleepy little village and it seemed almost deserted, except for the donkeys.
This charming lady came up while David was discussing the fresco's inside the little Church of Agios. She said they hope to restore the church to it's former glory. It is a tiny church, but is still loved by the people who live in Kastania. David and a local women talking about tourists
Church of Agios in Kastania This little church is at the entrance to the village of Kastania. It was quite small and well loved. The Fresco of Jesus was unusual in that he is not a he or a she.Jesus is androgenous in this Fresco.Usually you can't see Jesus's unmentionables. He is usually painted in a more modest fashion.I found it interesting as it was different than any other fresco I have seen. Fresco of Jesus Christ at this babtism
Some things are the same wherever you go in the world. Grandma's love tending their grandbabies. This little guy was very happy to have his picture taken. What a cutie pie! This picture was taken in the town square of Kastania near the Dourikas Tower. A doting Grandma with her grandson
Beautiful flowers in Kastania Kastania was a photographers delight. The few people that live in Kastania came out on balaconies to hear David talking to our tour group about the history of Kastania.
There were beautiful flowers peeking out on the walls if you slowed down and looked.Greece had pretty flowers everywhere.I was there in the fall, I"ll bet the flowers would be spectacular in the springtime.

The interior of this church was spectacular. The frescos were pretty, but it was this cross that really caught my eye. There were candles everywhere in the church. It was obvious that the locals of Kastania still use it on a daily basis.

This lovely little church had a feeling of serenity and peace inside.

We enjoyed a Nescafe in Kastania. I discovered that Nescafe is very popular in Greece. Our bus driver, Spiros, had one with him everyday.

We loaded up back on the bus to drive to lunch. It was a beautiful setting by the bay. Our group enjoyed fresh calamari and fries.
Calamari doesn't get any fresher than this!
